THE ORIGINAL FAIRMONT BAGEL BAKERY
Montreal, Quebec
Thinner, fully encrusted and a bit sweeter than the its southern counterpart, Montreal’s bagels are something to be admired. But it wasn’t until 1919, that Montreal got its first taste when a Russian Immigrant named Isadore Shlafmanhas opened up the first bagel bakery. “The Original Fairmont Bagel Bakery” found its permanent roots in 1949, when Isadore moved to a cottage on Fairmont Street, in what is now the Mile End District. Since then, his grandchildren have taken over but kept the same traditions & methods. Open 24/7 each bagel is hand rolled and cooked continuously in a wood-burning oven right on the premises. The menu boasts 20 different flavors, but I recommend asking for whatever ones have just come out of the oven. The warmth and texture will stop you dead in your tracks and make you swoon for more.
